SMS Hazelnut Truffles

Well, I think this is the very first Sweet Melissa Sunday I had an easier time locating ingredients than my American and Canadian counterparts. I'm usually on the P&Q fretting over course corn starch or asking what shortening is but not this time. One trip to Tesco and I not only found hazelnuts, but I found ready roasted and chopped hazelnuts for £1 whilst everyone over the pond were hunting high and low only to discover a bag for $8! For once, I lucked out!

These truffles were so so simple to make, just a case of melting chocolate and cream together and letting it set. As I've mentioned many times before, I live in a world of nut haters so rather than having to eat a whole batch of hazelnut truffles, I made more than half of them plain. But, to mine, and everyone else's surprise, the nutty truffles actually turned out to be the favored of the two, even among the nut haters. They were like little Ferrero Rocher's.

I subbed the hazelnut liqueur for almond extract as I didn't really fancy spending £10 on a bottle of booze I'd probably never use again. Check the delicious blog Living Life Foodcariously by the lovely Annie for this simple and delicious recipe! And, get yourself over the the SMS girlies to check out some more truffletastic entries.

The truffles look absolutely stunning, how funny that people ended up liking the nut version better. That is a great deal on hazelnuts; not only were they less expensive, it took me a long time to peel the skins off after I roasted them.

I used almond extract too and thought they tasted fine. Your truffles look great!

Your photo is stunning! I love it! I'd love to know what kind of camera you're shooting with. I liked the truffles too, even if they were a bit rich.

Hi Katie!

How are you? Your truffles are simply GORGEOUS- and I'm totally jealous that you found ready roasted and chopped hazelnuts at such an affordable price! I didn't have too much trouble finding the hazelnuts (I live in Boston, Massachusetts in the Northeast) but boy, were they expensive. But never having worked with them before, I wanted to give them a try, so I went with the original recipe instead of making substitutions. Oh, and just something to think about- you can always get a little "nip" or mini bottle of the different flavored liquors at your liquor store instead of buying a huge bottle (especially when you only need 2 tablespoons). My baby bottle of Frangelico worked just perfect for this recipe. Keep your eye out for them next time!

So I'm super excited to be hosting SMS this week, and I really hope you will bake along with me- it just wouldn't be the same without you! Hope you're doing well, and I look forward to talking to you again soon. Have a great rest of your week :)

2. I love your two-tone frosting. Beautiful.
3. I'm sad that I can't win that cookbook. It looks like it has some great recipes.
4. I swear on my life I did not copy your photo idea for snickerdoodles! This is the first time I've looked at it. I guess great minds really do think alike!!

They look delicious. I'm jealous you found the nuts already roasted. I have this strange fear of roasting nuts- they burn so easily!
